mission voted to ban lead-core wicks in 2003. Wicks that are
100 percent cotton, hemp or wood are recommended. Par-
affin wax is often used for candles, but it is petroleum-based.
Healthier choices include coconut, soy and beeswax, but be
sure it is 100% rather than blended with paraffin. Fragrances
can be man-made, synthetic or natural essential oils. Syn-
thetic fragrances are not inherently “bad” and natural fra-
grances are not automatically “safe.” To be cautious about
this, look for fragrances that are from 100 percent essential
      oil or are certified nontoxic.

Before you begin a candle making project, do some search-
ing online to learn about these aspects of candle making.
This will help give you confidence that your candles are not
only beautiful, but are also healthy!

      Picture Frames
We all have special pictures, whether it is a photo, a paint-
ing, or some other form of art, which will be enhanced when
set in a special frame. There are many ways to create special
frames. Some may require more skill, while others may be
quick and easy. Be sure to consider the image that is going in
the frame, as well as the room décor where the picture will
be placed. If you want a rugged, country look, consider barn
board. For a beach home, collect some driftwood or shells
on the beach. Just remember, it is important that the picture
and frame coordinate with the setting and with each other.

a homemade frame. Photo by Sally Brockett

A child’s drawing may be something you want to save and
framing it not only protects it for the future, but boosts the
child’s ego to see the picture framed and hanging in your
home. Framing can also be a family project if you choose a
style that fits with the abilities of those working on it.

Think about things that might be fun to create with your
family, or for your family, which will bring lasting memories
as well as functional use. There are many ideas for “do it
yourself” projects on the Internet and these gifts can have
more meaning to the recipient than a gift purchased at the
      store.
