How to Give
Fresh Flowers

a Long Life
Use a hand pruner
As we enjoy the spring weather, our attention turns to the beautiful
blooms that are now appearing in our gardens and yards. There
are a multitude of blossoms that you can enjoy, both outdoors
and indoors. Some are perennials and regrow every year, some
may be annuals that you plant this year and some may be shrubs.
We know that fresh flowers brighten our homes and our spirits,
but they often wilt and fade too quickly. How can we keep them
fresh for a longer period? Here are some tips that may be helpful.
Use fresh water in a clean vase.
Cutting Equipment
♦ Blades must be clean and sharp.
♦ Container with lukewarm water.
Cutting
♦ Cut early in the morning while plants are well hydrated.
♦ Cut buds at the right stage for that plant. Some should
just show color, while others need to be closer to full
bloom.
♦ Cut with a sharp garden tool or knife and put into water
container immediately - 3 second rule. Recut stems when arranging flowers.
♦ Cut above a leaf node.
Hydration and Preparation
♦ Wash vase with warm soapy water to remove all bacteria.
♦ Fill with several inches of room temperature water.
♦ Add flower food according to directions.
o Flower food regulates pH, kills bacteria, provides
nutrients and increases water uptake.
♦ Remove all plant material that will be under water.
♦ Remove any damaged material and insects.
♦ Make a 45° angle cut on stems and immediately submerge
in water.
